This evening Apple hosted their fall product launch unveiling a host of new products due to be released in the coming weeks. These include a brand new Shuffle, Nano and Touch along with iTunes 10 including a brand new exciting feature called ‘Ping’.

Heres a run down of the new stuff:

iPod Nano

    46% smaller, 42% lighter
Playlists, Artists, Genius, Radio – each feature is an icon like an iPhone app
24 hour audio playback battery life.
    Hard volume buttons
    VoiceOver support
    FM radio
    iPod Touch

Front-facing camera with FaceTime iOS 4.1 with Game Center
3-axis gyro
Apple A4 chip
4X pixels, 326 ppi, 24-bit color LED
Retina display
Even thinner than previous model

iTunes 10

New logo! From next spring iTunes will surpass sales of CDs in the US so Apple have decided to ditch the CD in their logo.
The big change is the news of a new feature called ‘Ping’ (Read more below) and the addition of concert listings.
iTunes 10 will be available to download via the Apple website in the next few days so keep your eyes peeled!

Ping is for “social music discovery.” A form of social networking for music; you can follow and be followed.
Ping allows you to opt in so anyone can follow you or choose to first approve your followers.
Following friends allows you to see what they’re listening to/downloading, what concerts they’re going to and more. 30 second song previews are available allowing you to not only see, but hear what your friends are listening to.It will also feature Artist pages whom you can follow. Here the artists will be able to promote & converse with fans. Users will be able to find out when and where artists and bands are on tour, and check out photos and videos they’ve posted.I’m sure you’ll agree, it all sounds like great work as ever from Apple and SME cant wait to get hold of iTunes 10 to try out Ping.

I started looking at Ping, but it seems like it is too iTunes centric to be of much general interest. The artists they recommend don’t make any sense for me. Seems more like they are just recommending the artists they launched the service with. It doesn’t seem like I can even become a fan of “Depeche Mode” on the service right now, let alone any of the electronic artists I would really like to follow.

As a way to advertise iTunes on FaceBook it is fine, but I don’t generally like to connect things up like that.
