[SME INTRODUCING] Run Jack Run by wearesme

Left to Right: Maz, Skip, Scout

Who? Run Jack Run is a 3 man band made up of two brothers: Skip & Scout (Singers & Professional Actors) and Maz (Producer/DJ). All music is written, produced, performed, mixed & mastered by RJR.

Yard? North London

Signed? It’s only a matter of time

Sounds Like? Grindie

Big Tune? Howl

Not only are SME proud to call these talented chaps our friends, but we also have the pleasure of hearing the amazing results of their new project Run Jack Run and bringing it to the entourage first.

We’ve been waiting patiently for some time as the boys worked hard on this project; desperate to hear the fruits of their labour. But being the perfectionists that they are, we knew it was going to be worth the wait and they certainly didn’t disappoint, going live today with their new website and material.

Below is their debut music video titled Howl, shot and directed by Rohan Blair-Mangat. Atmospheric, artistic, inspirational. And that’s just the video. The song draws on different emotions through Skip & Scout’s contrasting styles over Maz’s productions.

And as if that wasn’t enough, below are some more snippets of what’s to come from the band:

[SME INTRODUCING] The Heartbreaks by wearesme

Who? Matthew Whitehouse (vocals), Joseph Kondras (Drums), Ryan Wallace (Guitar) and Deaks (Bass)
Yard? Morecambe
Sounds Like? Romantic take on British pop culture
Big Tune? Liar, My Dear

Hailing from Morecambe, The Heartbreaks are still in their infancy (as a band, not literally) having formed just under two years ago in May 2009. Their inspiration comes from Motown, bittersweet romance and the English seaside.

In the short time they have been together, The Heartbreaks have been championed by the likes of NME and Clash, won the Manchester Evening News award for Best New Band and have been hailed by Carl Barat as “the greatest support band ever!” after their passionate live shows during a support slot on his UK tour last winter.

They have their first single being released in the Spring and are looking set to kick some life back into the indie scene along with The Vaccines and the release of new Arctic Monkeys and Strokes material.

2011 looks set to be bright for these guys, so keep your ears open for them.

[SME Introducing] Jamie Ley by wearesme

Who? Jamie, Matt, Jack, Elena & Bobby
Yard? London
Signed? D & L Music Productions
Sounds Like? A mash-up of Paolo Nutini, Mumford & Sons and Slow Club but more soulful and melodic
Big Tune? Suzy Sang

Jamie’s frist live show was back in December 2008 and since then he has made some very steady progress having featured on XFM’s Xposure and in magazines Dazed and Confused and The Fly. All this without having released any material. Quite a feat.

His wonderful sound could be placed in the Folk genre, but its more like Alt-Folk. With a range of talents such as playing piano, ukulele and guitar all to go with his beautiful soulful voice, we certainly think Jamie is going to be a future star.

Check out his MySpace for yourself.

[SME Introducing] Stromae by wearesme

Who? Stromae
Age? 25
Yard? Brussels, Belgium
Signed? Vertigo Records
Sounds Like? The beautiful language of French over rhythmic, infectious electro beats
Big Tune? Alors On Danse
Follow Up Single? Te Quiero (listen HERE)

Born and raised in Brussels, Paul van Haver originally appeared under the name Opmaestro. He later changed his stage name to Stromae (‘Maestro’ with the syllables switched, a practice called verlan)

He first signed to “Because Music” and “Kilomaître” in 2008 but it was in 2009 that he struck gold when Vertigo Records, a label of Mercury Records France (Universal Music Group) signed him for a worldwide licensing deal following the unprecedented success of his first single ‘Alors On Danse’.

The single was aired for the first time by music manager Vincent Verbelen on NRJ radio. The response was emphatic and the song quickly rose to number one in Belgium.

By May 2010 the track had reached number one in France, the Netherlands, Greece, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Belgium and the Czech Republic.

Evidently foreign music isn’t widely accepted in British chart music so sadly this banger never made it to our airwaves but it can be heard blaring in clubs throughout Europe this summer and now thanks to SME; in your bedroom, toilet, living room, etc.

SME Introducing… Best Coast by wearesme

Who? Bethany Cosentino (Vocals) and Bobb Bruno (Bass)
Yard? California
Mexican Summer
Sounds Like? We can hear twinges of Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac and Ramones
Big Tune? When I’m With You
Album? Crazy For You can be pre-ordered on iTunes now. Due to be released July 27th

Recently we announced that Best Coast featured on the new Converse song All Summer which also features Kid Cudi and Vampire Weekend.

Cosentino formed Best Coast after ditching the writing program at New York’s New School and returning home to her native Los Angeles. They hail from the mighty California and have a very beachy, lo-fi, poppy sound about them. Which we like, their tunes are very simple, quick and upbeat.

When it came to writing the music, Consentino took influences from some of her main passions including; the beach, weed, her cat and the state of California. Nice.

They started out recording their songs in Bruno’s bedroom before upgrading and moving to LA’s Black Iris studio, to record their debut album ‘Crazy For You’. The producer for this album was Lewis Pesacov, from Fool’s Gold and Foreign Born fame. We have had a sneaky preview and it is set to be one of the best records of the year.

Enjoy x

[SME Introducing] Civil Civic by wearesme
June 28, 2010, 8:30 pm

Who? Aaron Cupples (guitar, noise) and Ben Green (bass, noise) aka Civil Civic
Yard? London and Barcelona
Signed? Unsigned
Sounds Like? Hmmm… we’re not quite sure.
Big Tune? Run Overdrive
Album? Run Overdrive/Fuck Youth available HERE. 1-EP available on iTunes.

Civil Civic first met in Australia, although Aaron Cupples lives in London and Ben Green is based in Barcelona. Yes, there is thousands of miles between them but they make it work.

What they do is create their own beats and tunes in their respective studios at home and then send the MP3s to each other. They repeat this process over and over until they get the complete song as they want it. They do, however, prefer to be called a ‘band’ because they say “it downplays their live electronic element in a way that seems ‘just’ and ‘good’ “. Once you have recognised the process they go through to create their sound, the genius of Civil Civic really comes out and you can appreciate what they achieve.

We think that the final product is absolutely genius. Both for its intricacy and its simplicity. The mix of the guitar/bass and the electro noise works perfectly together and creates music that you cant hep but bop your head and tap your feet to.
Their upcoming single Run Overdrive and Fuck Youth is the sort of stuff that will really get a party rocking. Check them out and have a listen for yourselves.
