[Way Back When] Genius Cru – Boom Selection by wearesme

As we graced the rooftop of Shoreditch House last night to support our pal Steffie, who was on the decks, one of the other DJs dropped a big tune in the form of Genius Cru’s debut single Boom Selection. The dancefloor went crazy. And rightly so.

Released in 2000 and swiftly followed by second single Course Bruv, it peaked at number 12 in the chart (with Course Bruv only reaching 39) but it remains a classic.

Enjoy.

[Way Back When] Luniz – I Got 5 On It by wearesme

Following our interview with Dynamo, we would like to present you with this classic – chosen by the King of Magic himself.

After asking him to choose one song for our Way Back When feature he replied “Right, let me think properly about this one” and after a long pause said “I Got 5 On It, that beat was hard!” and we couldn’t agree more.

So here it is; taken from Luniz’s album Operation Stackola. The song samples Club Nouveau‘s “Why You Treat Me So Bad” (1986), Kool and the Gang‘s “Jungle Boogie” (1973) and Audio Two‘s “Top Billin’” (1987) and was released way back in 1995.

Enjoy.

More recently though, the song featured in a Nike advert starring top skateboarder Paul Rodriguez with some cameos from Kobe Bryant, Eric Koston and of course Ice Cube himself, which you can watch below.

It reached #1 in the U.S Chart and #2 in the U.K. The song, written by Ne-Yo, is listed at #45 on Billboard’s All-Time Top 100 Hot Singles during the first 50 years of the chart and was the 8th most successful single of the decade according to the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. Impressive!
