SME RELOAD: [REVIEW] Rock The Belles launch night @ East Village 28/01/11

[BIASED REVIEW] We Are S.M.E Blog Party Volume 2 18/02/11 by wearesme

After nursing some serious hangovers and using the time bed-ridden to piece together what actually happened on Friday night; we are now able bring you the following review…

There’s a phenomenon known as ‘sophomore slump’ – it’s best described as the collective apprehension that the second outing of something will fail to live up to the first effort. Bands have succumbed to it (‘difficult second album syndrome’) and so have newly promoted football teams who decide to finish in the top half of the table in their first season.

Would the We Are S.M.E Blog Party Volume II fall victim to the dreaded deuce? Would the loyal entourage be demanding compensation even though the party was free? Err, nah! To say the urban soiree popped off would be an understatement (the photo’s on the flip prove we’re not being biased).

Queen SME, DJ Steffie kicked off proceedings at our second home – Villian in London’s Shoreditch – with her usual hype and super-permed ‘fro. She was joined at the turntables by long time friend and collaborator Jason Taylor, the energy they gave off was mad – the two of them seemingly morphing into one filth-playing, skank-inducing DJ. Amongst this all was an impromptu rendition of Drake from SME, the vocal similarities were uncanny and it has to said that if SME ever fall on hard times, at least one member will find work as a Drake tribute act.

Not satisfied with providing the entourage with a skankathon, SME decided to throw a bit of history in the mix by reuniting resident DJ TP with DJ Marek after seven long years. Pretty much every man, woman and child (who let the kid in?) who heard them thought we were making the reunification up. Bringing with them a 3rd CDJ to act as hype-man, they were seamless; picking up where they left off all those years ago. And as if their serious set wasn’t enough, the pair produced our Volume 2 mixtape which went like hot cakes.

[REVIEW] Rock The Belles @ East Village with Yasmin and DJ Steffie 28/01/11 by wearesme

On Friday night (28/01/11) SME made our way to our second home East Village (home to our blog parties) for the launch of a cool new night called Rock The Belles. Rock the Belles aims to bring together the hottest female DJs, bands, designers and creatives for a genre-defying monthly celebration of the girls who are making their mark on the music industry.

On the night, 2 of those females making movements in the music industry were the incredible singer Yasmin, who was launching her debut single ‘On My Own’ on the night and SME’s very own Steffie, who was taking part in the all female DJ battle.

The night started off on the best note possible; bumping into A-Trak before his set at XOYO on our way to East Village.

We got to the venue and soon after it was ramo in the main room, with the queue outside making its way down Great Eastern Street. You had to feel for the guys waiting outside in subzero temperatures, but this reflected how big a night was on the cards.

The Work It Girls warmed everyone up with some old school RnB gems early on in the night. then later on in the evening, the vibe was turned up a notch. Steffie was spinning yet another big set upstairs, going head to head with the other 2 girls and Yasmin was tearing it up with a crazy cool Hip-Hop downstairs, which SME were definitely not expecting. The room erupted as she dropped banger after BANGER.
Good looking, the voice of an angel and a master on the decks…is there anything this girl can’t do!?

Check out some snaps from the evening below. And don’t miss Rock The Belles round 2 featuring Little Boots. Same venue on 25/02/11 and every last Friday of the month onwards.

And you can download Yasmin’s debut single/EP from iTunes HERE.

[NEWS] Coca-Cola Christmas Twitter Campaign in London by wearesme

Someone from Coca-Cola was clearly in attendance of our We Are S.M.E Blog Party in Shoreditch on Friday night, because in news released today, Coca-Cola is giving people the chance to post messages on its infamous electronic sign in London Piccadilly via Twitter.

O.K, so the electronic sign in Piccadilly is a lot more glamorous than the projector in Villain (East Village) but SME set trends, remember that!

The campaign, created by design agency Sedley Place, allows consumers to tweet their Christmas messages to the official Coca-Cola Twitter account (@cokezone) for the opportunity to have it displayed on the electronic sign.

Those who are lucky enough to have their tweets displayed will receive a direct message from Coca-Cola and their message will be shown on the sign five minutes later.

Tweets can also be viewed live on their website, www.cokezone.co.uk/piccadilly, via a webcam set up to film the sign.

The campaign runs until 23 December.

SME’s are currently in talks with our lawyers regarding the matter.

Oh and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter! @wearesme
