SME RELOAD: [REVIEW] Rock The Belles launch night @ East Village 28/01/11

[BIASED REVIEW] We Are S.M.E Blog Party Volume 2 18/02/11 by wearesme

After nursing some serious hangovers and using the time bed-ridden to piece together what actually happened on Friday night; we are now able bring you the following review…

There’s a phenomenon known as ‘sophomore slump’ – it’s best described as the collective apprehension that the second outing of something will fail to live up to the first effort. Bands have succumbed to it (‘difficult second album syndrome’) and so have newly promoted football teams who decide to finish in the top half of the table in their first season.

Would the We Are S.M.E Blog Party Volume II fall victim to the dreaded deuce? Would the loyal entourage be demanding compensation even though the party was free? Err, nah! To say the urban soiree popped off would be an understatement (the photo’s on the flip prove we’re not being biased).

Queen SME, DJ Steffie kicked off proceedings at our second home – Villian in London’s Shoreditch – with her usual hype and super-permed ‘fro. She was joined at the turntables by long time friend and collaborator Jason Taylor, the energy they gave off was mad – the two of them seemingly morphing into one filth-playing, skank-inducing DJ. Amongst this all was an impromptu rendition of Drake from SME, the vocal similarities were uncanny and it has to said that if SME ever fall on hard times, at least one member will find work as a Drake tribute act.

Not satisfied with providing the entourage with a skankathon, SME decided to throw a bit of history in the mix by reuniting resident DJ TP with DJ Marek after seven long years. Pretty much every man, woman and child (who let the kid in?) who heard them thought we were making the reunification up. Bringing with them a 3rd CDJ to act as hype-man, they were seamless; picking up where they left off all those years ago. And as if their serious set wasn’t enough, the pair produced our Volume 2 mixtape which went like hot cakes.

[Way Back When] Genius Cru – Boom Selection by wearesme

As we graced the rooftop of Shoreditch House last night to support our pal Steffie, who was on the decks, one of the other DJs dropped a big tune in the form of Genius Cru’s debut single Boom Selection. The dancefloor went crazy. And rightly so.

Released in 2000 and swiftly followed by second single Course Bruv, it peaked at number 12 in the chart (with Course Bruv only reaching 39) but it remains a classic.

Enjoy.

[2000] Way Back When:

* PlayStation 2 was launched
* The billionth living person in India was born
* Eminem’s second LP, The Marshall Mathers LP sells 1.76 million copies on its debut week, becoming the fastest selling rap album ever

[SNAPS & VIDEO] We Are S.M.E Blog Party @ Villain 26/11/10 by wearesme

First and foremost, we would like to thank each and every one of you who attended last night. The night went better than we could ever have anticipated and we owe that all to you!

For those that couldn’t make it, shame on you! Only joking, but you did miss a big un.

We had Chico, Steffie, TP and Twiggy Garcia all on the decks and a surprise appearance from Twiggy’s partner in crime Trufix.

The standards were set high from the off, with Chico getting the crowd buzzing as only he knows how. And at no point from there onwards did the standards drop. Each DJ absolutely killed it!

Steffie spun a sick genre filled set, mixing classics with some hard dub beats and DJ TP, our ‘S.M.E Volume 1’ DJ, pulled out another flawless set. His mix of Tempz and Swedish House Mafia was greeted with a sea of gun fingers. BRAP!

And finally, Twiggy took to the decks, going back to back with Trufix and bringing with them an entourage of MC’s and a world exclusive play of a tune they worked on together in the studio. This track was a MADNESS!

Thanks to everyone who got involved in the live Twitter feed throughout the night and we hope you enjoy your free T-Shirts and Mixtapes. Because of the demand we are going to make the mixtape available for free download for any one who didn’t get a CD on the night. Watch this space.

Check out a few pics from the night below along with a video montage! The rest of the pics from the night can be found on our Facebook Page.

SME love you x
