This time last week love was in the air on Valentines day and we’ve certainly got love for Jamie xx’s live set at The Corsica Studio’s for the Boiler Room Valentines Session.

And as if having Jamie on the decks wasn’t a sufficient Valentines surprise, he brought along Yasmin to go b2b and perform a new track that they have been working on; a cover of Rui Da Silva’s classic house song ‘Touch Me’.
It is unclear if this brilliant re-work is set to feature on Yasmin’s debut album on which Jamie has been producing, but either way SME hope it gets a release.

[LISTEN] The Streets – Computers and Blues (Full Album) by wearesme

And so, this album marks the end of an era. The end of Mike Skinner’s creation that we grew up listening to. The end of ‘The Streets’.

It started almost a decade ago, when, in the year of the second millennium (note: the world has yet to end), Mike Skinner released ‘Has It Come To This’ under the name The Streets. It was a breakthrough track charting immediately in the Top 20.

Mike went on to release the ground-breaking and now legendary album ‘Original Pirate Material’, which originally charted at #12 but incredibly surpassed this position 2 years later when re-charting at #10, following the release of his second album ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’.

The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize and was everyone’s favourite to win, but it lost out to Ms. Dynamite.

A Grand Don’t Come For Free, another classic, is a concept album about a short period in a fictitious characters life. This included the priceless story of said character somehow losing £1000 down the back of a T.V set! The album initially charted at #2 but went on to claim that elusive #1 spot.

‘Dry Your Eyes Mate’ was the stand out track on the album, reaching 1st spot in the chart; Skinner’s only number 1 single to date.

The next album was ‘The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living’ which debuted at number one on the album chart. It saw a change in style from Skinner with him moving away from stories about working class Britain and instead focusing on the ups and downs of the fame that he had acquired. Despite the success of the album, it was a change that wasn’t received with widespread approval.

The penultimate album of Mike’s 5 album record deal was the somewhat overlooked ‘Everything Is Borrowed’ which achieved quiet success charting at #7, but for reasons unknown, it never really made an impact.

And this, the 5th record, will be the last. Computers and Blues has been in production for over 2 years after it was announced back in 2008 will be released on February 7th 2011. Mike said the album will be “one more banger” and will be “dancing music to drink tea to”.

Here’s your chance to listen to the album in full before its release on Monday, and have your say on whether it does The Streets’ legacy justice and if it is in fact “dancing music to drink tea to”.

SME were delighted to hear the news that ‘The Black Album’ was being honoured on Zane Lowe’s ‘Masterpiece’ show for Radio 1 as it is up there with our all time favourite albums. And the show lived up to every expectation.

What is Zane Lowe’s Masterpieces?

From 22 – 25 November 2010, Zane’s Masterpieces returns for a fifth season to celebrate what Zane and his team consider to be some of the greatest albums ever made.

Over four consecutive days, Zane and a host of special guests will pay tribute to these incredible albums and play them out for you in full. This means zero interruptions, no censorship and no talking as the albums are played back exactly as they were meant to be heard, so you and listeners across the world can join together for a unique moment of shared music.

Tonight’s Masterpiece was the amazing ‘Black Album’ from the legend that is Jay-Z. Zane spoke to the man himself, plus Tinie Tempah, Big Boi, MIA and Linkin Park explained why they think the album is a classic. He then played the album in full, without interruption, as it was meant to be heard.

Lend Zane, Jay and SME your ears; you wont regret it.

The Black Album

The Black Album is the eighth studio album by American rapper Jay-Z, released November 14, 2003, on Roc-A-Fella Records. It was promoted as his final studio album, although Jay-Z returned to solo recording with Kingdom Come in 2006.

The album featured some big name producers in the shape of Eminem, Damon Dash, Just Blaze, The Neptunes, Timbaland and Kanye West who made a name for himself producing on HOVA’s earlier album ‘The Blueprint’.

The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 463,000 copies in its first week.
